Original Wallpaper and Pattern Design
I was thrilled to be shown these original vintage wallpaper designs and sketches found at Brimfield Antique Market. They are hand painted and drawn and clearly show the manual drafting and layout techniques of the individual designer(s) working on them.
One could argue that hand drawing is less accurate than digitally producing designs in terms of repeat pattern, color palette and depth. However, designs created manually contain a quality that is hard to replicate on the computer. Less than perfect lines and organic shapes emerge from the human hand. Painted brush strokes encompass an energy which gives movement to the end design. Motifs aren’t simply duplicated without individuality, they are traced by hand again and again and even the smallest motif can be repeated but remains an original form in its own right.
